Biography:

After graduation from East Carolina “College” in 1966, I taught in high school for five years. Then I had babies for five years, finished my Master’s, and was fortunate enough to find a position in the community college. My career at Pitt Community College began in 1990 as a member of the English department. My passion for Developmental Education surfaced quickly, and I was asked to be Reading Coordinator. In 1996, the Developmental Studies Department was established, and I was appointed Chair. Since that time, our staff has grown to ten full-time instructors and one half-time secretary. We serve approximately 2000 students each semester in English, Math, and Study Skills.

Courses taught: Eng 075, Eng 085, and Eng 095

Professional Organizations:

I have always been active in professional organizations because I believe that we need to stay current and we need to keep growing as instructors. I have been a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Southeastern Conference on English in the Two-Year College (SCETC), the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), the North Carolina Association of Developmental Education (NCADE), and the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE). I have served as President of NCADE and am serving as President of NADE for 2006-2007.
