BURLINGTON, N.C.—With their backs to the wall, the Pitt Community College baseball team kept the 2008 season alive by reeling off six straight wins to claim the Region X Conference Tournament on Sunday at Burlington Athletic Stadium. Coach Tommy Eason's squad (40-13) opened tourney play on May 7 with a 10-2 loss to USC-Salkehatchie. Knowing full well another loss would bring the season to an end, the Bulldogs fought back with victories over Surry Community College, USC-Salkehatchie, Florence-Darlington and top-seeded Spartanburg Methodist before taking two from Louisburg. With the tournament title in hand, PCC advances to the NJCAA Eastern Districts to face a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Saturday and Sunday. A regional championship would mean a trip to Grand Junction, Colorado, for Pitt to play in the NJCAA Division I World Series May 24-31. |
KANSAS CITY, MO—His recovery from pre-season surgery complete, Freddie Bynum is back in a Baltimore Orioles uniform and has been named the team’s starting shortstop. Bynum was called up from a rehab assignment in Double-A Bowie on Wednesday and immediately sent to Kansas City for Thursday’s game against the Royals. The former Pitt Community College standout finished 2-for-4 in his 2008 debut last night in Kansas City with a run scored as Baltimore took a 4-1 victory to go 17-18 on the year. |
BURLINGTON, N.C.—Pitt Community College baseball kept its season alive today with a 6-1 victory over Surry Community College in the second round of the Region X Conference Tournament. Jake Brown (10-1) started and went six strong innings for Pitt to pick the win. The sophomore struck out 10 and allowed the lone Knights run on four hits and three walks. Josh Aldridge earned the save for the Bulldogs. The former J.H. Rose hurler pitched the final three innings for PCC, giving up just one hit and a walk while striking out five. |
WINTERVILLE—A pair of former Pitt Community College pitchers have been contributing to the success of East Carolina University’s baseball program this season. Britton Cole and Brett Butts both played for Bulldogs coach Tommy Eason before transferring on to play with the Pirates, who are 32-13 in 2008 heading into tomorrow night’s contest with UNC-Wilmington |
KINSTON--Pitt Community College battled back from five down to take a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth only to see the advantage slip away in a 7-6 loss to Lenoir Community College Wednesday night. Having gone 2-2 against the Lancers in 2008, the Bulldogs were looking to win the season series last night at Grainger Stadium but found themselves in a 5-0 hole after four innings. PCC battled back, though, with scores in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings en route to a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Lenoir put the tying and winning runs on in the final frame, prompting Pitt Coach Tommy Eason to call on Lonnie Chisenhall to close out the game, as he had done in six of seven appearances this season. But save number seven never materialized for the sophomore right hander as Todd Seymour singled to left to plate the winning run for LCC. With the loss, Pitt--ranked 28th in this week's NJCAA Division I poll--fell to 31-12 overall. The Bulldogs, 24-8 in conference play, close out the regular season this weekend against Region X opponent Wilkes Community College in Boone. |
