Dawgs Battle but Fall Short in Region X Tournament

PCC finished the Region X Conference regular season in fourth at 15-11. |
HARTSVILLE, S.C.—A day after thumping Louisburg College to open Region X Tournament play, the Pitt Community College softball team ended its season at 26-23 overall with losses to Spartanburg Methodist College and USC-Salkehatchie.
Entering the post-season on a four-game winning streak, PCC made it five straight with a 5-0 victory over the Hurricanes on Friday to earn a matchup with Spartanburg in round two of the double-elimination tournament.
Spartanburg Methodist, which had a first-round bye as the tourney’s top seed, was the only Region X squad the Bulldogs didn’t beat at least once during the regular season. And though the fifth matchup between the two teams produced the same result, the Bulldogs made the Pioneers work for the victory.

WINTERVILLE—A showcase/skills camp Pitt Community College softball held earlier this year is reaping rewards for Bulldogs Head Coach Junior Bailey in terms of recruiting for the 2009 campaign.
With J.H. Rose pitcher Amy Godley and Bertie High infielder Holly Cowand already signed for next season, Bailey recently added Middle Creek High School’s Madison “Mattie” Arthur and Wake Forest-Rolesville’s Elizabeth Massey to his incoming recruiting class.
Both recruits drew Bailey’s attention at the skills camp he and his coaches conducted in January.
“Mattie and Elizabeth performed very well at the showcase,” Bailey said. “Our coaching staff knew very early in the camp that we wanted them and players like them to join our softball program.”

Dawgs Come Up Big in the Clutch

WINTERVILLE—A bunt by Pitt Community College's Nicole Jordan brought a sliding April Langley across the plate, capping a dramatic, come-from-behind 4-3 victory in game one of PCC's doubleheader last night with Region X Conference-rival Louisburg College.
Tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, Langley drew a walk to get the Bulldogs’ rally started. The sophomore centerfielder stole second and made it to third when Amber Taylor reached base on an error.
That brought up Jordan, whose bunt attempt sailed high and over the heads of the Hurricanes’ infield rushing in to make the play. After initially retreating to third thinking the ball would be caught, Langley reversed direction and beat the tag before being mobbed by her teammates at home plate.
