Basic Skills
All Basic Skills classes are
free.
Basic
Skills Orientation Schedule
The mission of the Basic Skills program is to
assist adults to become literate and
obtain the knowledge and skills
necessary for employment and
self-sufficiency, assist adults who
are parents to obtain the
educational skills necessary to
become full partners in the
educational development of their
children, and assist adults in the
completion of a secondary school
education. The North Carolina
Community College System provides
educational opportunities for adults
to improve their reading, writing,
mathematics, and communication
skills through five major program
components.
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
A program of instruction for
adults, 16 years of age or older and
out of school, who seek to improve
their reading, writing, speaking,
problem solving, math, and life
skills to function more effectively
in society, on a job, or in the
family.
Adult High School (AHS)
A program of instruction offered
cooperatively with the local public
school system to help adults earn
Adult High School Diplomas.
General Educational Development (GED)
GED Hotline: (919) 807-7139 A program of instruction designed to
prepare adult students to pass the
GED tests in order to earn a high
school diploma equivalency. The
tests are Language Arts, Writing;
Language Arts, Reading; Mathematics;
Science; and Social Studies.
English As a Second Language
(ESL) A program of instruction to help
adults with limited or no English
language proficiency.

Citizenship:
Instruction
for adults applying to become
naturalized U.S. citizens.

Conversation: Instruction
for ESL adults needing to
improve their English
conversation skills.
- TOEFL:
Instruction for adults
preparing to take the Test of
English as a Foreign Language.
Compensatory Education
A program to provide mentally
handicapped adults with skills to
become more independent and
self-directed and to meet and manage
community, social, work, and
personal adult responsibilities.
Learning Center
The Learning Center is an
individualized lab setting that
offers adults opportunities to
improve their reading, writing and
math skills through
computer-assisted instruction,
videos and/or printed materials. You
can prepare for college entrance,
study for the GED, enhance your
computer skills or just review the
basics. To enroll, you must take a
test to help us determine your areas
of need.
ACE (Achieving College Entry) Lab
A lab designed to help prepare
you for the college entrance test
(COMPASS/Asset).
Life Skills
A basic skills program to assist
adults by improving life skills so
that they will become better
workers, citizens, and family
members.
Workplace Programs A program of instruction for
employees to upgrade their
job-related basic skills.
