Silk Painting
Hours: 12 

Painting on Silk lends itself to many applications, wearables, home furnishings, fine art and art quilts. This class is for the beginning silk painter. This course will review silk painting methods. Our goal in this class will be to paint and design silk scarves and beyond. The instructor will provide a detailed walk through the process and demonstrations. (Includes some materials) Cost: $65


Introduction to Metal Design
Hours: 12 

Students will learn the basics of metalsmithing: sawing, filing, soldering, and riveting. Students will make simple rings and pendants them move on to a project of their choice. Continuing students will work with the instructor to problem solve, refine their skills, as well as assist them with more advanced projects. Class fee does not include additional studio time.

Daytime Potter’s Wheel
Hours: 12 

This is the perfect class for those people interested in learning and perfecting throwing on the potter’s wheel. New students will learn the basics of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, pulling up, and more. Continuing students will work with the instructor to problem solve and refine their skills. Class fee does not include additional studio time. Cost: $79


Evening Potter’s Wheel
Hours: 12

Clay Handbuilding
Hours: 12

Students in this class will learn how to use slabs, coils, texture, and surface techniques to create pottery, tiles, or sculpture.  Clay can be used to make almost anything, so come equipped with your ideas! Cost: $79


Drawing and Painting: Oils, Watercolors, and Acrylic
Hours: 12 

This class will focus on the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Students will be exposed to mediums within the broad definition of drawing and painting such as oil, watercolor, and acrylic paints as well as graphite, charcoal, pastels, and more!  Students may work in mediums of their choice. Beginners and all experience levels are welcome.  Students will work on an artwork with a subject matter of their choice.  A still life will also be provided for those who wish to hone their life drawing and painting skills. This class will include demos, handouts, and personalized critique, tailored to the experience level of the student. Cost: $65


Watercolor Basics

This is an introductory class in the art of watercolor painting. You well be introduced to the very basics of working with watercolor paintes and applying various techniques to create art. The class is an excellent outlet opportunity. Cost is $45


Advanced Watercolor Painting
Hours: 33

This class is a continuation of the Beginning Watercolor class. The class will be held at the Grifton Community Center. Cost $55.


Family Stories Workshop
Hours: 36

Every family has stories to tell, but many are lost before they’re recorded. In this workshop, students will receive guidance in how to write and structure these stories and their own. Through a balance of lecture, stimulating memory exercises, discussion, and class feedback they will be able to create a permanent record of these stories for posterity. Cost is $65


Creative Writing Seminar
Hours: 36

This course is designed for the experienced as well as the inexperienced writer. The emphasis is on creativity, writing, and critique. Assignments are read anonymously and critiqued by class members and the instructor to work toward improved writing technique and communication skills. Tip sheets on the elements of writing are supplemented by exercises. All genres of writing are welcome. Revision and submission for publication and competition are encouraged. Cost is $65


New Horizons Band
Hours: 48

If you are looking for a fun way to learn a musical instrument without the rigors of individual instruction, you might want to consider joining the New Horizons Band. The New Horizons Band is for adults, ages 50 and up, who wish to learn to play a band instrument for the first time, or relearn an instrument, the New Horizons band provides a relaxed, fun learning situation. The New Horizons Band provides adults with little or no musical experience the opportunity to play band music with others. The band meets two days a week. Instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone, other instruments are considered upon request. Come join the fun with this ensemble and discover your hidden (or dormant) musical talents! Cost: FREE


Reading Music I
Hours: 12 

This course is designed for individuals with no music reading experience as those who wish to improve their music reading skill. Course content will include the history of musical notation, the elements of music and how they are written, collaborative activities, and group participation. Cost: $35

 

Reading Music II
Hours: 3

Prerequisite: Reading Music I

This course will build on concepts learned in Reading Music I. Course content will develop music reading skills and introduce basic music theory concepts through collaborative activities and group participation. Cost: $35


Classical Music: A Primer
Hours: 6

This course will explore the traditions of Western art music via the structure, style and composers of works to be performed at the upcoming PCC Symphony Orchestra concert. Course content will include listening, lecture, discussion, an introduction to score reading and conducting, and a hands-on introduction to orchestral instruments. No previous musical experience required. Cost: $60


Flute Ensemble
Hours: 12

This class will explore and develop fundamentals of chamber music for flute. Aspects of playing flute such as tone production, intonation, rhythm, and technique will be addressed. Students will learn to play duets, trios, and quartets as an ensemble. Beginners through advanced flutists welcome; students will be grouped by level of proficiency. Cost: $169


Group Piano for Senior Adults, Part I
Hours: 5

This course is an exploratory introduction to playing the piano for beginners. Students will learn basic hand positions, simple melodies, note names, and beginning music reading. Each section is different and use new rolls. Cost: $49


Group Piano for Senior Adults, Part II
Hours: 5

Prerequisite: Group Piano for Senior Adults, Part I

This course builds on skills learned in Group Piano, Part I. Students will develop two-handed techniques with basic hand positions for chords, learn more complex melodies, read chord symbols, and use music symbols to play the keyboard. Each section is different and use new rolls. Cost: $49


Music Exploration for Senior Adults

This course is a hands-on introduction to music. Students will come to appreciate all aspects of music through listening, responding, creating, and understanding music through their bodies, minds, and spirits. Emphasis will be on movement, singing, playing instruments, and reading music. Topics will include the elements of music, styles, multicultural aesthetics, improvisation, and composition. Cost: $49


Secrets to a more Realistic Painting

This oil painting class is for all skill levels from beginners to professionals.  You will gain valuable secrets that will take your art to a whole new level.  This class will add 6 years of experience to both beginners and professional and will specialize in oil portraits and other exercises. Join us for fun tips and tricks that will make your art pop. Cost is $75


Spanish: Beginning Conversation I
Hours: 30

This course will prepare students to have conversation with Spanish speaking individuals. Topics include basic fundamentals of grammar, oral comprehension, various dialects, and basic conversations. A beginning vocabulary will be established. Cost $79.


Spanish: Beginning Conversation II
Hours: 30

This course is a continuation of the Level I course. The instruction learned from Level I will be further utilized. Participants will build their vocabulary and ability to converse with Spanish speaking individuals. Cost $79.


Tae Kwon Do
Hours: 12

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean style of self defense art.  This course will help students develop and appreciation for Tae Kwon Do as a martial art.  The techniques learned will provide students with an understanding of basic self-defense techniques and provide a foundation of Tae Kwon Do.  Cost: $65


Arts & Crafts
Hours: 36

This class will utilize various mediums to create your own arts and crafts. It is a great way to create unique, personal gifts for the holidays, or anytime! The class will be held at the Grifton Community Center. Cost: $70.   


The Celebration Singers

People who sing together often seem utterly happy and engaged in life. Singing, Swinging Seniors is a fun-filled choir for adults, ages 50 and up. If you enjoy singing and socializing… this is the group for you! Come enjoy music from Gospel to Broadway show tunes and just about everything in between. Singing may offer benefits to deep and controlled breathing and focus on maintaining good use of the lungs, diaphragm and abdominal muscles. In addition, singing maintains good speech and diction.
