Auto Safety & OBD Inspection Courses

North Carolina requires emission systems tests for cars and light-duty trucks as part of the annual safety inspection in 48 counties. Tests are required in these counties for 1996 and newer vehicles that are equipped with On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems.

Pre-registration and pre-payment is required for all courses.

Auto Safety Inspection

Pitt County College is approved by the NC Division of the Motor Vehicles (DMV) to offer the Vehicle Safety Inspection course. This eight-hour course is designed to prepare auto techncians and service personnel as safety inspectors for motor vehicles. The class includes regulations and test-inspection procedures and is taught to ensure that you understand the rules and regulations, can inspect a vehicle properly and can pass the qualifications exam. Upon passing the exam for certification as a safety inspector, you can do inspections at a licensed inspection station.

This course is both the initial and recertification course.
Cost $70

Pre-registration and pre-payment is required.

Auto OBD Emissions Inspection

This eigh-hour course is designed to prepare auto technicians and service personnel as OBD Emissions Inspectors. For initial certification, students must attend eight (8) hours of training. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required.
Cost $80

Auto Safety OBD Emissions Recertification Inspection

This five-hour course is designed for already licensed OBD Emissions Inspectors. For recertification, students must attend five (5) hours of training.
Cost $80
