Moodle Transition
"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow"
-John Dewey
What is going on?
The PCC campus will commence migrating from our current Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard (Bb), to the Moodle LMS (LMS, CMS - Content Management System & VLE - Virtual Learning Environment are all interchangeable terms used to describe Moodle) starting with the fall '09 semester.
What is Moodle?
Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is fast becoming the LMS of choice for educators around the world as a tool for creating dynamic online courses for their students.
Moodle is an Open Source LMS - this doesn't mean that Moodle is free. Open Source means that the source code that powers Moodle is free to modify, edit and distribute, there is still a cost component attached to Moodle for hosting and service. Moodle is copyrighted under the GNU General Public License giving Moodle certain protections but allowing users the certain freedoms of modifying, editing & distributing the source code.
Moodle is designed around the social constructionist pedagogy and will give PCC the ability to provide a powerful LMS to our instructors and students.
What is the plan?
The following pages will layout the plan to move from Blackboard to Moodle over the next 18 months. Please bookmark this site and visit frequently as we update the official Moodle transition information.
