Softball Sweeps Mt. Olive to Start 2012
WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College opened the 2012 season Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Mt. Olive College at Winterville Recreation Park.
After falling behind 1-0 in game one of Sunday’s action, the Bulldogs rallied back with three runs in the fifth en route to a 3-1 victory. In game two, PCC broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win.
A leadoff double by Christie Wright in the top of the third helped Mt. Olive score the first run of game one. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Katie Moore’s fielder’s choice brought Wright in from third to make it 1-0.
Pitt answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman Dana Branch led off the inning with a double before taking third on a single by Kelli Patrick. Cassie Harrell’s sacrifice fly to center field brought Branch home to tie the game at 1-1.
The Bulldogs went on top 2-1 when Patrick came around on a ground out to second by Kaylee Nappo. Sophomore Brittany Gibson followed with a two-out double and came home on an Erica Sage single to give PCC a 3-1 advantage that held up the rest of the way.
Dayvee Daniels picked up the win for Pitt. The freshman came in for starter Kelli Patrick in the fifth and didn’t allow a hit or a run in the final 2 1/3 innings while striking out two and walking one.
Patrick allowed three hits and one run while striking out three and walking three in 4 2/3 innings.
PCC got on the scoreboard first in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader. After second baseman Amanda Daw drew a leadoff walk, she moved to third on a single by Gibson. Patrick came through with a sacrifice bunt to squeeze Daw home for a 1-0 lead.
Mt. Olive responded with three scores in the third to go ahead 3-1. Lead-off batter Kayla Voorhees flew out to center field to start the inning before Beth Overman reached on an error to right field.
Katie Moore singled to left to score Overman. She then moved to second on a wild pitch and came home to make it 2-1 when Tiffany Hawley reached first on an infield error. Rebekah McDaniel followed with a single to score Hawley.
The Bulldogs tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth when Nicole Delarosa and Daw scored on a Sage single to right field.
PCC put the final run on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Delarosa reached on throwing error and came around on a walk-off double by Gibson.
Freshman pitcher Mary Kate Morris earned the victory. She relieved Daniels and held the Trojans scoreless over the final four innings.
PCC will look to make it four straight wins to start the season on Sunday with a doubleheader at home against Methodist College, starting at 11:30 a.m.
