McDuffie Too Much for Johnston to Handle
WINTERVILLE—Keovonta McDuffie poured in 28 points to power Pitt Community College past Johnston Community College in Region X Conference action Saturday, 91-86.
With the win, PCC swept the regular-season series with the Jaguars and moved to 14-10 overall, 7-3 in Region X.
The Bulldogs trailed 46-34 at the half, due in large part to the hot shooting of JCC’s Kenny Reed, who scored 26 points in the first 20 minutes – 18 of those points coming on six 3-pointers.
But PCC turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and cut the deficit to eight at 52-44 by the 15:32 mark. McDuffie scored five of Pitt’s seven baskets during that burst.
The Bulldogs then strung together a 19-9 run to take the lead at 63-61 with 8:28 to go in the game.
It was tied at 70-70 with 3:45 on the clock before PCC finally pulled away. A pair of free throws from Demetrius Irby, who finished with 15 points, helped seal the game for the Bulldogs.
Ridge Hodges added 16 points for PCC, which travels to Hickory on Sunday for a rematch with Catawba Valley Community College.
