Courtney KochWINTERVILLE—After topping Wake Tech for a third time this season, Pitt Community College’s 2008 campaign came to an abrupt end Saturday with a loss to Spartanburg Methodist College in the Region X Conference Volleyball Tournament.

PCC hosted this year’s conference tourney in the Charles Coburn Center and led off the single-elimination event with a three-set victory over the fifth-seeded Eagles, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17. The win led to a showdown with top-seeded Spartanburg, which went 2-1 against the Bulldogs during the regular season.

Behind 14 kills from Region X Player of the Year Tiffany Dean, the Pioneers proved too tough for PCC once again, topping the Dawgs 25-19 in the first two sets before closing out the match with a 25-14 win in the third frame.

Callie HaithcockWINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College volleyball’s roller coaster season continued last week as the Bulldogs squeezed a non-conference win over Louisburg in between a pair of Region X Conference losses.

After topping Wake Tech Oct. 15, PCC was cruising at home three days later against Guilford Tech when the wheels came off. After taking the first two sets from the Titans with ease, Pitt dropped the final three and the match, the team’s second five-set loss to Guilford this season.

Callie Haithcock led the Bulldogs with 14 kills and 22 digs against the Titans, and freshman setter Jessica Sweers tallied 56 assists. PCC recorded 13 service aces for the match (five from sophomore Danielle Towler), but that success was negated by 19 errors from the service line.

Jessica SweersWINTERVILLE—After two weeks on the road, Pitt Community College volleyball returned home Wednesday and cruised to a three-set Region X Conference win over Wake Technical Community College, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18.

Efficient passing led to easy wins in the first two sets before Coach William Way emptied his bench against the Eagles in the final frame. “The better we pass, the better we play,” Way said.

Freshman setter Jessica Sweers, filling in for the injured Camille Holland, finished the game with 34 assists to go along with six digs. “(Jessica’s) done a great job and made sure we haven’t skipped a beat offensively,” Way said, adding that Holland, a sophomore, is day-to-day with a broken finger on her right hand.

Callie Haithcock paced the Bulldogs offensively with 11 kills. The freshman out of D.H. Conley also chipped in six digs.
