Program structure
Activities of the Pitt Community College preschool Laboratory are designed to foster each child's physical, social, emotional, intellectual and creative growth. Since play is the main way preschoolers learn, most activities are in the form of play and hands-on activities. Music, art, literature, language arts, science experiences, excursions, block building, creative arts, sand and water play, group discussions, special visitors, cooking experiences, and math concepts are woven into the daily program. Activities are designed to build self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
The teachers are facilitators of learning and are responsible for planning the curriculum and implementing daily lesson plans into activities.
The daily schedule allows for a balance between:
- active and quiet activities
- familiar activities and new and challenging ones
- teacher-directed activities and child-selected activities
- indoor and outdoor activities (weather permitting)
