The Resume
Facts and Tips about Resumes
- Help you collect your thoughts about your goals, education, past experiences, and put them in terms that employers can understand.
- Assist in obtaining an interview, especially when accompanied with a cover letter to apply for an advertised opening.
- Do not substitute for networking. Jobs come through people, not paper!
- Serve as 30-second commercials. Present the most important items first. The more space you devote to an item, the more important it should be.
- Use short phrases and be specific. Stress successes and related experiences.
- Should be one page for a recent graduate with limited experience; two pages for alumni with experience.
- Do not include height, weight, and salary desired.
- Omit religious/political/social affiliation unless you feel it is necessary to help you get the job.
- Omit anything negative on your resume.
- Proofread carefully. Save your resume to a disk for easy updating.
