Disability Services Policies
Public Notice
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and not Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires public educational institutions with 50 or more employees to inform the public about ADA and how the laws affect the institution's services and programs. Schools can comply with this requirement by preparing handbooks, manuals, posters, pamphlets or information for broadcast. In disseminating this information, educators must comply with the ADA requirement that communications be offered in alternative formats such as large print.
Pitt Community College Policy Statement
Pitt Community College encourages academically qualified students with disabilities to take advantage of its educational programs. It is the policy of the College not to discriminate against persons with disabilities in the educational programs, services and activities.
No qualified student with a disability may be excluded from participation in an activity or be denied the benefits of any course of study on the basis of a disability.
Procedural adjustment involving modification of course requirements for attaining a degree should not result in substantive difference in course requirements. Academic requirements that are demonstrated to be essential to the program of instruction being pursed will not be modified.
The college will not impose upon students with disabilities rules that limit participation (such as prohibiting tape recorders in the classrooms or not allowing the use of guide dogs). (Section 504, Subpart E)
The College will provide methods of course examination or other procedures for evaluating academic progress, rather than testing the impairment of students who have a disability that impairs sensory, manual, or speaking skills.
No student with a disability will be discriminated against in access to classes because of mobility impairment. The College will take appropriate steps to ensure that no student with a disability is unable to obtain an education because of a lack of auxiliary aids.
Students are encouraged to visit Disability Services, Vernon White Building, Room 20, or call (252) 493-7294 (Voice or TDD), when they need assistance or have questions about disability issues, including state and federal nondiscrimination requirements.
