Services to Students with Disabilities

There are hundreds of students with disabilities at Pitt Community College. They come from a wide range of disability backgrounds including mobility, visual, hearing and learning disabilities. There are also individuals who experience other functional limitations as a result of chronic or intermittent health problems such as arthritis, diabetes and epilepsy. The disabilities may be permanent or temporary and all students with disabilities are eligible for services. Students with disabilities are fully integrated into the College campus and are provided with the necessary resources to manage their disabilities in their educational activities.

Disability Services (DS) serves students who find their disability is a barrier to achieving academic or personal goals. DS was started with a strong commitment to improving individual choices, personal control of essential resources, and integrated participation in campus life. Disability Services provides information concerning campus as well as community resources and provides specialized support services, as defined by the System Office, to students with disabilities.

Disability Management Counseling

Disability Management Counseling addresses the specific issues and concerns directly associated with a students disability.

Interpreting Services

Disability Services coordinates the provision of sign language interpreters to facilitate communication in course lectures, discussions, labs and extracurricular activities on campus.

Note Taker Services

Disability Services provides note-taking assistance in lectures, discussions and labs.

Access to Tutoring

The College provides tutoring for students with disabilities to the same extent it is provided for all students. If students have concerns about access to tutoring, they should make an appointment to see the Tutorial Officer in Trailer 23, which is located on the north side of the Vernon White building.

Test-Taking Arrangements

Each semester, students with documented disabilities receive accommodation letters to give to the faculty. The letters contain specific Disability Service recommendations for appropriate exam and other in-class accommodations.

Access to Special Adaptive Equipment and Assistive Devices

Disability Services loans variable-speed tape recorders, talking calculators, assistive listening devices and other equipment as available to individual students.

Registration Assistance

Disability Services collaborates with the Registrars Office to arrange for registration and enrollment assistance as needed to accommodate the functional limitations of the students disability.

Referral to Other Resources, Services and Agencies

Disability Services staff provides individual student referrals as appropriate to external resources including: Vocational Rehabilitation, Division of Services for the Blind, and the Mental Health Center.

Orientation for Students with Disabilities

Orientation is offered during the summer for new students and an additional orientation is available on an individual basis.

Pre-Admission Assistance

Pre-admission information regarding Disability Services is available to applicants and prospective students.

Services for Students with Temporary Disabilities

Students with a temporary disability, usually due to an injury (such as a broken writing arm, an eye injury, etc.) should be referred to the Disability Services after the individual has received medical treatment. The student may be eligible to receive services such as note taking or special test administration.
