Commencement Ceremony

Clothing

Try graduation gown on prior to the ceremony for hem length and hang up for wrinkles. You may want to bring bobby pins for your cap. Tassels on right side when entering ceremony. Academic Excellence medallions may be worn. No pocket books. Don’t bring in a program--it will be in your seat.

Program

Commencement address will be delivered. Degrees will be conferred as a group. Tassels turned when instructed. Tassels right to left.

Behavior

Formal Service. Please keep dignity and pride in the graduation ceremony for your fellow graduates. Children are encouraged to attend only if they are old enough for the ceremony to be meaningful to them. Ask your families to leave with crying babies and children or the ushers will ask them to leave. Hold applause and yelling to the end.

Seating

Special seating is available for guests with disabilities. See any usher when arriving, but specifically the Director of Disability Services and one additional staff member are assigned to oversee the special seating. Interpreters for the hearing impaired are seated stage right on the arena floor and special seating is reserved. The elevator is located near the football field end of Minges at gate 2.

Graduates Line Up

Graduation begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. Graduates must be at Minges and lining up by 6:00 p.m.  Anyone not in line for the final roll call by 6:15 p.m. will not be allowed to march. We cannot afford to have anyone out of place or slip anyone in at the last moment. Please be patient with the last minute "name check". This is a safety guard for a smooth commencement. Feel sick or faint--tell someone immediately. When you recess out, do not stop in the hallways--go outside to a predetermined meeting place to see family/friends.

On Stage

The student ambassadors will let you know when your row should stand and move towards stage to receive your degree.

After receiving your degree, please exit the opposite side of the stage, stopping to shake the President’s hand (or designee). Pause a moment for Photo Specialties. Pictures will be sent to your home address for ordering. When you return to your seat, be seated immediately so that others may see behind you. No one will go through two times--both degrees will be received at one time.
