Controlled Smoking Policy
It is the policy of Pitt Community College that smoking is prohibited in all college facilities and vehicles, and within twenty-five (25) feet of all Pitt Community College building entrances.
Tobacco Facts
- Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in NC and nationally.
- Young adults (18-24) have the highest rate of current tobacco use among all groups.
- Young adults are the only age group nationally in which smoking rates have been rising rather than falling.

Why Tobacco-Free Colleges?
- More than one third of young adults (18-24) attend college.
- The gap is narrowing between college and non-college young adult smokers.
- More than 60% of college students have tried a tobacco product and nearly half used tobacco in the past year (45.7%).
- College is a time for experimentation.
- Smoking is associated with other risk behaviors.
- College students are role models.
- The college setting presents a prime opportunity for interventions.
