Grant to Help Develop ESL Distance Learning
WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College's Basic Skills Program received approval of an $8,204-grant this month to begin a distance learning program for a select group of English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
PCC Basic Skills Director Marilyn Beaumont says the Project IDEAL Distance Learning Grant from the North Carolina Community College System will serve approximately 30 ESL students who have placed into advanced instruction through an academic assessment test.
Beaumont said instruction created through the grant would provide a bridge for ESL students who want to transition into the college’s GED and curriculum courses. She said the students would either enroll in an online course, My Skills Tutor (an online program to improve reading, writing and math skills), or a hybrid course that combines computerized instruction with traditional classroom teaching.
