RT Students Compete in National Quiz Bowl

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College students represented North Carolina’s respiratory therapy training programs in a national quiz bowl competition last week, a little more than a month after they took first place in the N.C. Society for Respiratory Care’s (NCSRC) annual Sputum Bowl.
On Sept. 27, during the NCSRC’s annual conference in Concord, PCC’s Bobby DeGiosio, Tabitha Gonzalez, Luv Harris, and Katie Lehman combined their knowledge of respiratory care to defeat teams from four other colleges. With the victory, they received a trophy and $1,700 to compete in the national quiz bowl event, which took place during the 58th International Respiratory Convention & Exhibition in New Orleans Nov. 10-13.
Student Emily Vandiford was added to the PCC team for the national competition in which the group performed well but was eliminated after the second round of competition.
According to Donna Neal, dean of PCC’s Health Sciences Division, Pitt has fielded teams in the state quiz bowl competition every year since 2002. This year’s victory was the college’s fourth.
