PCC to Train Ayden's CMI Plastics Workforce

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College is teaming up with Ayden’s CMI Plastics, Inc., to train 60 employees at the thermoforming company through $30,000 from the NCWorks Customized Training Program.

On Thursday, PCC President G. Dennis Massey joined CMI Plastics President Steve Hasselbach Jr. and others involved with the training to formally announce the partnership and tour the CMI Plastics facility.

"Pitt Community College trains existing workers at many industries on a regular basis, gearing company needs with best practices and resources,” Massey said. “I have visited CMI in the past and am proud that we can help take this growing firm to the next level of productivity and service."

According to Mary Paramore, PCC Director of Business and Industry Services, the college’s Business and Industry Department will facilitate the training, which will allow CMI Plastics workers to gain new skills and much-needed certifications. The new certifications, she says, will help the company reach additional markets in the automotive industry, which will, in turn, provide an economic boon to Ayden and surrounding area.

“This NCWorks Customized Training project shows the dedication of North Carolina and Pitt Community College to helping companies grow,” Paramore said. “Through the project, CMI employees will gain professional and skill development and the company will gain credentials that will open them up to a larger customer base.

“More customers means more work, and that means more jobs,” she continued. “For Ayden and for PCC, growth of our local companies is significant to our economy.”

Paramore says PCC’s customized training program will span the entire employment chain at CMI Plastics, with employees receiving specific training on maintaining thermoforming equipment, operators receiving customized quality training, and supervisors gaining Situational Frontline Leadership skills training. She says the training will begin in January and continue for three years—all at no cost to CMI Plastics.

“This program is another example of how PCC and NCWorks is helping companies like CMI grow,” said Steve Hasselbach Jr., president of CMI Plastics, Inc.

Hasselbach said that two years ago, PCC and NCWorks helped his company obtain its ISO 9001:2008 quality management system certification. The latest training, he said, will center on helping CMI Plastics obtain a TS 16949, which is a certificate geared toward a higher-level quality system required by potential automotive customers.

“Without the commitment from our employees and the support of Mary Paramore and PCC, we could not advance in the highly-competitive sector of plastic thermoforming,” Hasselbach said.

The NCWorks Customized Training Program is designed to fit the needs of each company PCC partners with, providing comprehensive training and advancement of local businesses into new markets. The program aims to boost the economic growth and workforce of the region it supports.
