TRIO Makes Christmas Merry for 15 Families

WINTERVILLE—For the eighth year in a row, the Pitt Community College TRIO program held its Christmas Sponsorship Program to ensure students in the program and their families have a merry Christmas.

According to LaTonya Nixon, director of PCC TRIO Programs, the Christmas Sponsorship Program is an opportunity for the community to support students who typically have very limited resources and face obstacles that hinder their educational success.

“This is an event that allows the PCC family and community to give back to students who persevere to accomplish their goals in the midst of barriers they face on a day-to-day basis,” she said.

Nixon said that through the program, active TRIO students anonymously complete applications in November, requesting practical items, such as food and clothing, and wish list items, like bicycles and gift cards. The applications, she said, are submitted to sponsors on and off campus, who purchase the requested items.

“TRIO staff members are honored to host this event and look forward to it every year, and we are especially appreciative of all the sponsors for their unselfish generosity, Nixon said, adding that the Christmas packages were presented to 15 families Dec. 10.

A federal outreach and student services initiative, TRIO has been an active part of retaining students at PCC since 2005. The college currently offers a pair of TRIO programs—Student Support Services (SSS) and Educational Opportunity Centers (EOC)—that are collectively referred to as TRIO Works.
