Community Invited to ESL International Day

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College will celebrate the many cultures of its English as a Second Language (ESL) students with a special “ESL International Day” program on April 19.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Craig F. Goess Student Center multipurpose room.

Tables will be placed around the room for ESL students to set up displays that are representative of their home countries, which include France, India, China, Korea, Japan, Iraq, Yemen, Mexico, Peru, Belarus, Cameroon, Vietnam and Haiti. More than 25 countries will be represented.

PCC ESL Instructor/Coordinator Janice Fisher says that in addition to celebrating the students’ cultures, the program will give them a valuable opportunity to practice speaking English with attendees.

In addition to displays, Fisher says some students will wear traditional clothing from their home countries while others will perform cultural demonstrations.
