WINTERVILLE—It was with great sadness today that Pitt Community College administrators announced the unexpected passing of Radiography Director Karen Lee.

Born June 3, 1962, Mrs. Karen Martin Lee was a lifelong Pitt County resident. She was 53 years old when she died on May 27.

Upon graduating from D.H. Conley High School in 1980, Mrs. Lee went on to graduate from PCC’s radiography program in 1982. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from East Carolina University as well as a master’s in adult education.

After working eight years as a radiographer at Pitt County Memorial Hospital (now Vidant Medical Center), Mrs. Lee spent the next 26 teaching at PCC. She joined the faculty in 1990 as clinical coordinator for radiography before being promoted to her role as director in 2009.

“Karen was a valued member of the Health Sciences Division team and was totally committed every day to the success of her students and the radiography program,” said PCC Health Sciences Dean Donna Neal. “She touched many lives throughout her 26-year career at PCC and will be missed dearly by all of us.

“Please keep (her husband) Donnie and the remainder of Karen's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.”

Described by students as “exceedingly caring, encouraging, considerate and professional,” Mrs. Lee went above and beyond to provide those she taught with everything they needed for success in college and their future careers. She was a two-time recipient of the Joseph E. Downing Award for Excellence in Teaching (1998 and 2015) and was also nominated for the prestigious honor in 1991 and 2000.

Mrs. Lee was a longtime member of St. James United Methodist Church in Greenville and was a member of the Down East Society of Radiologic Technologists and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. An avid reader who also enjoyed exercise, she will be fondly remembered by many for her love of family and keen sense of humor.

Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Willie Elizabeth Martin, and her loving pet, Katie Lee, a precious Boxer. She was married to retired PCC Business Division Dean Donnie Lee, of Winterville, for 31 years and was a loving wife, daughter, sister and aunt. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Theresa M. Brothers and husband, Brad, of Waynesville; brother-in-law, Stacy Lee and wife, Stacy, of New Bern; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Lee’s honor may be made to the Pitt Community College Foundation, “Paula Davis Scholarship Fund,” P.O. Drawer 7007, Greenville, NC 27835.
