ECSU Chancellor Stresses EducationWillie Gilchrist Is Featured Speaker for 2008 College Bound Event |
Chancellor Willie Gilchrist tells minority males attending PCC's College Bound program that education is "serious business" and that they must continue their schooling after high school graduation in order to prepare for the kind of jobs that will support them in the future. "The train is moving, and you cannot afford to get off," he said. |

WINTERVILLE—Willie Gilchrist, chancellor of Elizabeth City State University, was the featured speaker in April at a Pitt Community College event held to encourage Pitt County minority males to pursue higher education. Called “College Bound – Here We Come,” the program featured seniors from each of the county’s six high schools touring the PCC campus, interacting with Pitt mentors, and receiving candid advice from the 58-year-old Gilchrist. As he began his speech, the ECSU chancellor warned the students he would not be pulling any punches during his remarks. “I’d rather hurt your feelings at your age and shock you back into reality than for you to be turned down later at every corner because you aren’t presenting yourself well,” he said. With 90 percent of the fastest-growing jobs in America requiring post-secondary instruction, Gilchrist told the teens they would need a college education in order to find a job that pays more than minimum wage. Simple math, he said, demonstrates that $6.15 per hour isn’t even enough to cover life’s essentials. |
